Cleansers come in many forms. Cleansers that rinse clean with water and are not too harsh are the best choices. Soap is not usually recommended as it can leave a film on the skin and can be quite alkaline, causing dryness.
It's important to cleanse the skin of impurities before applying your daily moisturizer. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends washing your face 2x daily and anytime you sweat heavily because perspiration can irritate your skin.
If you use an acne medicated cleanser, it is recommended to leave it on up to 1 minute before rinsing in order to increase the contact time of the active ingredients with your skin.
